I feel like I missed out on something...

I know I've been complaining (yes, complaining) about friends a lot lately and its probably not something any one wants to hear, but sometimes its better to get it out than let it fester.

I was thinking about it (again) and I've decided that maybe I've missed something that everyone else has done. I was driving back from a friends house (yes, someone does care) and I was seeing undergrads at SU going around together and drinking and having fun. And then I realized that I never once spent one night let a lone  a whole summer doing nothing but hanging out and spending time with friends. I am now in grad school, working on a PhD and I wanna hang out when I"m not in lab, but no one that I associate with here wants to anymore. Maybe its because they all did those frivolous things while I was busy making money.

So in some ways, I'm better off than they are (no loans). But does that mean I missed out on social time and friendship and fun? If so, how do I make it up, or can I? Should I even be here? Am I serious enough to make it through?

The trouble is that I can't really see myself doing anything else, but I don't know if I'll be happy once I have my PhD. I can only hope that once I do and I get working I'll love it and never think twice. Maybe I'll even look back at this and my doubts and say "I'm glad I made it through."

    I can only hope though.

  • I couldn't believe this

So, I found this on a friend's wall on facebook and I couldn't believe what people said-- and meant! (Color coded for ease of reading) All names are removed.

Friend's status: F the NEWS, It needs to STOP! Michael Jackson was a FREAK! and i don't see why people even liked him, the child rapist is in HELL now and nobody should be glorifying this Weirdo, who cares about his childhood! AHHH Stay Dead Michael!

    Me
    wow. strong feelings much?

    Friend
haha yah, i'm really sick of hearing about it, and just want some normal news.

    Person 1
I agree lol everyone seems to forget that he was a child molester....

    Person 2 (friend's mom)
BEAN!!! I agree..I can't STAND the guy..he took away from Farrah Fawcett and I think that just totally sucked!!!

    Person 3
First, yes, I agree it's being over-broadcasted. Second, I believe he did some things that would be considered "inappropriate" by most coherent, grown adults... but I don't think the man had it in him to molest anyone. His mind never grew up enough to even grasp that concept. Third, the reason why his childhood is being hashed out is because his ... Read Morechildhood was a large part of why he turned into the person he turned into. He had problems, just like most of our society now. The only difference is that his were plastered all over the place, which is not a very healing environment.

Music wouldn't be where it is today without him. He was brilliant, artistically. His weirdness shouldn't stop us from acknowledging and memorializing how he's influenced current music. That's incredibly close minded.

    /end novel long comment.

    Person 4
I think people need to stop blaming their "childhood" for making bad choices....you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences lots of people have hard lives but they all don't choose to molest, rape, or fondle children; however you wrap it up it is still wrong...it is even more disgusting when people get away with it because they have money.

    I agree with you Friend.....

    Person 3
The assumption that he got away with it because he has money, is just that... an assumption. It's strange that everyone has jumped on the "He was a child molester!" bandwagon even though he was proven not guilty. Yes, it may have happened... but it just as easily could have -not- happened. I'm choosing to leave opinions of his lifestyle out of the ... Read Morewhole thing (because no one will ever know what really happened) and just recognize what we -do- know. He changed the music industry.

It's not a matter of "blaming" his childhood, I think it's a matter of looking at facts. Everyone is shaped by their childhood. If it shapes you in bad ways, you either heal from it or you don't. Michael Jackson never had the time and space to learn how to heal from his and I'm sure that contributed to his troubles.

For all we know, maybe he had legitimate issues. Maybe he was autistic, maybe he was manic depressive. Who knows. It's just not in good taste to bash someone on the day of their memorial.

    Friend
    Person 3!,
finally i hear from you and its on here.. about a dumb Michael Jackson status comment.. haha, i figured you'd be the different one on this.. hands down Michael was a freak and whether anybody "understands" him or not is already weird, people shouldn't be that hard to understand and whether this guy could grow up or not shouldn't even be ... Read Morein question everyone has to grow up no matter what situations they're in and this guy had Many many years and fame to do it.. and all the money to get away and have personal time that he wanted, instead he tried to become white and a woman, obviously he was messed up. I'm just sick of how much time and money they're spending on this guy, just let him die and forget about him.. put something on the wall for the sicko and move on, i will only recognize him for his ability to dance and make music back before he did his weirdo changes and almost dropping his kid..after that, i have no respect for him, alive or dead.

    Person 3
"Michael was a freak and whether anybody "understands" him or not is already weird, people shouldn't be that hard to understand"
That is unbelievable. It's that stance that has created so many problems in this world. Just because you can't understand something doesn't make it wrong. It just means you can't understand.

"whether this guy could grow up or not shouldn't even be ... in question everyone has to grow up no matter what situations they're in"
What if he was genuinely disabled in some way, though? He obviously had a mental block somewhere. Props on the empathy....

"he tried to become white and a woman"
Actually, he was trying to look like Peter Pan. He had an obsession with being a child and being Peter Pan. Hence, Neverland. This is Fact #1 that makes me think that there was a mental disorder running loose. Dissociative Identity Disorder, anyone? People loved the drama too much to encourage him to seek help. People like to have opinions more than they like to do what's right.

     Me
He also adored Diana Ross and if you look at a picture of him compared to her, they looked a lot alike.

I just think the whole thing is sad, he was a sad man and I really do think that how he was raised/had a public childhood had to do with how he acted later in life.

Yes, you do make choices, but when you're a child you don't really know the repercussions of these things... and later in life if you don't know the regular how can you react to the abnormal?... Read More

It also was NEVER proven that he was a child molester. Back off a dead man's memory.

I certainly won't bash YOU when you die. Why can't everyone just leave him alone?

    Friend
i'm just saying that i'm not sad that he's dead and i'm sick of hearing about him.. hopefully when all the channels stop playing his memorial it'll all be over. I'm not saying he didn't do some great things, whether i'll ever understand something about the dude.. that's all.

    Person 4
what great things? dance moves...singing....oh humanity will never be the same! How about dangling ur baby off the balcony and sleeping with little children. To me and for alot of others that overshadows good music and dance moves.

on the brighter side maybe the children he purchased will now have a chance at normalcy.

Friend look what u stirred up today! LOL..I miss u!!

    Friend
    :) miss you too

    Person 3
He -completely- changed the face of the music industry. No artist would be who or what they are today without him. He is the reason why there are music videos, he changed modern dancing, all major music artists now have roots in Michael Jackson's sound. And on top of that, he was a major humanitarian in every sense of the word. He has done far more... Read More for our world than most people will ever do. And why is everyone so dead set on accusing him of child rape? He was -proven innocent-.

Also, since when are surrogate pregnancies anything out of the ordinary? People have fertility issues all the time. And the only thing that's going to make his children suffer is people making their father out to be some sort of monster.

    Person 5
...He is a monster!!! I agree with Mrs Wise up there! Everyone needs to get over him and themselves. He got what he deserved!

    Person 2
well personally when they call him "the king", I am assaulted!!! Elvis Presley was the KING and he changed the way of music and dancing and the way people saw rock and roll alot better and many years before Michael Jackson did...And YES!! I am sick of him being plastered all over the damn news as well, there's more important things out there we need to be worrying about and concentratiing on than Michael Jackson!!!

    Person 2
AMEN ANGELA!!! take the man OFF the pedastal already and move ON!!!!!

    Person 5
Yes! Very nice Mrs. Hoffman! People need to just change the channel now. Its over, he is where he should be now, surrounded by fire!

    Person 4
He thought he could purchase anything, that different rules applied to him...in the end thats what bit him in the ass or was it arm?

    Person 3
Ugh. This intolerance has just completely killed my faith in people. It was never proven that he even -did- anything. You guys are all damming him to hell because of your own assumptions and opinions, which is just crass.

    Person 2
BEAN!! look what you started!!! good for you speaking your opinion..Momma loves you!!! lol

    Person 5
Im sorry you are naive sweetie but OJ wasn't found guilty either when he killed his wife but he did. I fully support the Hoffman's on this one.

    Person 6
wow, Justin, you really know how to get people going!! lol

    Me
Wow, everyone has such confidence in the US Justice system...

    Person 7
How about everyone else who passed away I think they deserve just as much attention OR MORE THAN A CHILD MOLESTING FREAK WHO COULDN'T DECIDE WHAT COLOR HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE. ANYONE WHO THINKS HE WAS GREAT OR "THE KING" SHOULD BE RIGHT THERE WITH HIM.

    Me
I hope you don't really mean that.

    Person 6
Yes she means it and I agree with her.

     Me
You would really wish for thousands of people to die?

    Person 6
I don't tolerate ignorance and anyone supporting someone like Michael Jackson is ignorant.

    Person 8
Justin, you took the words right out of my mouth! Good riddance to him. And to Madelynn Nicole... Michael Jackson was NEVER FOUND NOT GUILTY!!! He was never found guilty, because he paid huge amounts of money to have the lawsuits dropped. BIG DIFFERENCE!!! And you can't argue that is is not true, because they have been talking about it for twoweeks....millions were paid to settle the suits. THIS DOES NOT SAY HE IS NOT GUILTY!! IN FACT, IT MAKES IT PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT HE WAS GUILTY, OR WHY WOULD HE HAVE PAID IT???

    Person 4
    woooo hooooo Person 8

    Person 6
Exactly Mrs. Blair! As I said earlier, everyone needs to get over him and themselves. He is just where he should be!!!

Does this really bother you? Can you understand how they feel? How I feel? What would you do?

  • Has anyone ever wondered how they choose which side of the street is going to be the odd numbered side and which side is the even numbered side? Is it like.. the north or east is odd and the south or west is even? It baffles me :)

  • I've been thinking about this for a while.

Have you noticed that more recently people have been on one extreme end of the political spectrum or the other? Maybe its because I have a friend on facebook that doesn't like the current administration and posts negative things about it... but it seems to me that more and more people seem to avoid moderate opinions and moderation and go gung-ho with their opinion.

And more and more, as I watch the news about the elections in Iran and the intense scrutiny the Obama administration is under, I wonder how we got this way? Is there something about our ability to have free speech really made us so outspoken and opinionated? What ever happened to politeness and hearing out your opponent's side?

Many other countries think that Americans are loud, outspoken warmongers that will push our beliefs and governmental system on others. I am starting to think they're right. Its perfectly fine to want to help other countries, but who says our way is the best? Perhaps instead of invading Iraq and saying "no, do it this way" was not a smooth move, however we don't know what would have happened if we didn't. Honestly, I think Obama has a hard road to walk and I wouldn't want to be in his place at all. I commend him for what he's done this far.

I would also like to point out that while a majority of our problems are from Bush, there are a great many things that occurred during his term that he could NOT control. He might not have been a good public speaker and he might have made mistakes, but  we all do.

Its not just the political arena that I've noticed these problems. People are more outspoken and opinionated in EVERYTHING. Even sports! How many times have you seen FANS get in fights because one team won instead of another? Its becoming rediculous.

I know I'm standing on a soapbox right now, preaching to the crowds, but honestly, I feel that we need to take a step back, take a deep breath and slow down. Opinions are just that--a belief held by one person based on their life experiences, education and other beliefs. There is no way to say one opinion is right and another is wrong. I think its perfectly fine to get fired up and debate with someone over something, but you need to be able to listen to the other side to make your arguments better. And once the debate is over, leave it there. You can still be colleagues or friends and it shouldn't depend on your personal outlook. In fact, it should strengthen your relationship.

What does any one else think? Am I totally crazy?

    Some Mad Hope

So I really should be more productive right now...

But instead I'm sitting here, doing this. In the middle of lab. Oops. Well I guess it could be worse, I could be doing this instead of doing legit work. Which I kinda am...Whatever.

Anyway, I have finished my first year of grad school. it was a little bit rocky, but I'm doing ok now. I've joined a lab, and it should hopefully be wonderful. My mentor is a wonderful man and although he is very intense about science (and also asian) I really feel comfortable around him to be myself. Just a very productive and intelligent version of myself.

I have lately been having (more) drama in my social life. I want to remind myself to just be me and do what I want. If people have a problem with it, let them deal with it. My boyfriend is a wonderful calming influence and he constantly reminds me that I should do what I want. I am striving to be more like him in that he doesn't over analyze things. Somehow, I think this is going to be difficult because science and grad school are teaching me to be really analytical and question everything that someone says. I guess I'm going to have to learn how to separate the two parts of my life.
